Happy Birthday Linux - 18 Yrs OLD today

Breaking News:

I am so glad to get the news and saying it to all my friends who are the supporters of Linux that today on 24th August 2009, Linux OS has turned 18 yrs.

It has been an old saying that linux has been one of the favorite OS for geeks. But this is not true. The OS has been adopted by many of the people who actually changed the scenario of web OS technology. It is the best example of technology which has evolved with time. I can bet you with that. Currently there are around 9 different types of Linux OS in the market.

Now lets come to the point.

Aug. 25, 1991: Kid From Helsinki Foments Linux Revolution - Linus Torvalds. He was 21 yrs old when he posted this mail.

Hello everybody out there using minix —

I’m doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won’t be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones. This has been brewing since april, and is starting to get ready. I’d like any feedback on things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat (same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons) among other things).

I’ve currently ported bash(1.08) and gcc(1.40), and things seem to work. This implies that I’ll get something practical within a few months, and I’d like to know what features most people would want. Any suggestions are welcome, but I won’t promise I’ll implement them :-).

PS. Yes — it’s free of any minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs. It is NOT protable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never will support anything other than AT-harddisks, as that’s all I have :-(.

So it was the mail which revolutionized the world with lot of hopes regarding the word “OPEN SOURCE”.

I wish that the kernel of Linux OS will be growing and scaling a lot more in coming days.

Wishing once again Happy birthday Linux.
